Default Tune Up Tips???

Well today was a good day, putting the finishing touches on my lathe.I would be able to turn it on just to see how quit it is or is not listening for strange noises, but I drop one of the nuts for the motor terimal and it hit the floor running cause I could not catch up to it so its gone Now try finding an 8/36 nut on a Sunday at one of the big box stores, let me save you from the misery they don't have it.OK to my question-once I finish installing the very last screw, dusting it off and before I flip the switch what should I do to get the best performance out of my lathe after being restore.I think one of the first things is to get the tailstock on center w/spindle,make sure all the jibs are snug but not to the point that its diffcult to move. What else should I do besides reading the Atlas book again? When I do finish I will post afew pics, but I must warn ya'll that its alittle stylish may offend some---kroll

I wouldn't worry much about offending anyone with whatever plumage you've dressed your lathe with --it's your lathe. Who knows you might start a trend.

All the stuff you mentioned is fine --I think most of the tune up will come as you start using it --because that's when the stuff that needs attention will start talking to you about it.

The one thing that I think is probably best before you actually throw the switch is be sure of where the chuck key is --like not in the chuck. Yeah, not me... but the deal is we've all done it, you will to sooner or later. I just figured I'd mention it to you so it isn't the soonest possible (on the first start).

Zero.

A magnet in my shop would result in a bundle of floor items. Now they will be mangetized stuff.

And none of it will be what I just dropped.

If we had a contest for the most lost parts and tools, I would be in the running for #1.
