Default Yet another newbie...

Hi!

I rescued a (sort of) family heirloom from auction, and plan to restore it. It's a South Bend 13" from 1950. In the pic, it looks like hell, as it was just pressure washed. I plan on having the remaining paint dry-ice blasted, then repainting it. Meanwhile, i've acquired the spare parts manual for it, and....that's where i'm at. So: 1.) Is there a good parts source out there? Some of the gears, and the cross-feed acme screw will need attention. and 2.) Anything else i should be looking for wear-wise?

thanks!

There are many sources for parts.
Your host, Jeff Beck is one.
eBay is a good source.
Gears are always problematic. SB used a lot of 18 DP gears. These are not common.

Will make just about any gear you need.

Backlash in the feed and compound screws can come from both wear in the screw and nut and wear in the way SB mounted the screws. I recently posted here on this forum on how to remove the latter type of play. The screw and nut can be replaced.

Go to www.wswells.com. Look at both the "How to repair" section and look at the "Projects" section.

There is a wealth of information including exploded drawings at:

You will need to join but its painless.

OY! Pressure washing will push water up where the sun don't shine! Better treat that lathe like it was in a flood. Dry it out and clean/oil it up soon.

I have a 1949 13" S.B. Lathe I'm redoing, I've gottem most of my parts off E-Bay.

There is a guy the makes new nuts for the 13" he is in Michigan. I got both nuts from him and unknow to me the cross slide screw was replaced and wouldn't work.

He redone the screw for me and only charged $20.00 (Cheap) so I think he is a pretty good guy.

I still have a long way to go but its getting there May I'll have it up and running this year.

But right now these 101 temps are stopping all my projects.

Paul
